STAR Awards Program

IPSHR is a performance based registry which recognizes, celebrates, and awards merit to patterned horses that are excelling in the worlds of open and recognized breed shows.

The STAR program is a leveled award program, which gives horses the opportunity to not only achieve in a category, but also build on that achievement and advance within each category itself.

STAR awards are issued in the following categories.

  1. INSPECTION STAR is awarded to any horse or pony that undergoes the inspection process by an IPSHR approved sport horse registry.  A copy of the inspection form shall be sent to the IPSHR STAR Awards Program Secretary along with the STAR Award Submission form.

    1. Gold STAR award shall be issued to a horse that is scored in a manner that places him or her in the top level of the inspecting registry.

    2. Silver STAR award shall be issued to a horse that is scored in a manner that places him or her in the second level of the inspecting registry.

    3. Blue STAR award shall be issued to a horse that is scored in a manner that places him or her in the third level of the inspecting registry.

    4. Red STAR award shall be issued to a horse that is scored in a manner that awards him a total score of no lower than 60% with no score of below 6 on the inspection form.

  1. PERFORMANCE STAR is awarded to any horse or pony that demonstrates excellence in open or breed based competition.  Approved performance categories are Dressage, Hunter, Show Jumping, Eventing, Reining, and Driving.  Points shall be accumulated using the IPSHR Point System, and Performance STARs shall be awarded as the horse arrives at the following STAR markers.

  1. SUITABILITY STAR shall be awarded to any horse or pony of any age that is shown either in-hand or at liberty in a class that is designated as in-hand, model, or suitability.  Such classes shall judge the horse, pony, or foal according to the accepted IPSHR standards of suitable sport horse conformation and movement and not by a particular breed standard; therefore, classes designated as “halter” shall not qualify under the suitability STAR unless approved by the IPSHR council.  Points shall be accumulated using the IPSHR Point System, and Suitability STARs shall be awarded as the horse arrives at the following STAR markers.

In an effort to make things unilaterally fair to all participants, a class under multiple judges shall be considered as ONE class.  In such an event, the participant may select which judge's score to submit for points.

Example :  ApHC 4-judge show.  5 horses in class.  A horse placing one 1st, two 2nd's, and one third.  The STAR participant may elect to submit the points for first place (5), second place (4), or third place(3), but not for all four placings which the horse received.

  1. HIGH POINT STAR shall be awarded to IPSHR performance horses that have achieved the highest categories of achievement for individual years.  The Championship STAR is a high-point award, and shall be awarded as follows:

    1. Gold STAR shall be awarded to the horse or pony who has the highest number of points at the end of the calendar year.

    2. Silver STAR shall be awarded to the horse or pony who has the second highest number of points at the end of the calendar year.

    3. Blue STAR shall be awarded to the horse or pony who has the third highest number of points at the end of the calendar year.

    4. RED STAR shall be awarded to the horses or ponies who appear in the top ten list of high point IPSHR horses.

    Calculating High Point Totals

High Point shall be calculated for each calendar year

Performance and Suitability  points shall be totaled using the IPSHR Point System.  Points shall only be awarded for the year they are submitted to the STAR Awards Secretary.

Inspection points shall be awarded as follows:  Gold Star = 20 points, Silver Star = 15 points, Blue Star = 10 points, Red Star = 5 points.  Points shall only be awarded for the year they are submitted to the STAR Awards Secretary.

Reproduction, Service, Trail, Associations, and Recreation STARs are cumulative in nature.  Points shall be awarded as follows: First Star earned in a year = 10 points,  Second STAR earned in a year = 20 points, Third STAR earned in a given year = 30 points.

Example :  A horse earning two red stars in Service and Associations in a single year shall get 10 points for the Service STAR and 20 points for the Associations STAR to total 30 points.

Example :  A horse earning a red STAR and blue STAR in a single category shall get 10 points for the red star and 20 points for the blue STAR to total 30 points.

High Point points shall be calculated as follows.  A horse shall receive one point for each year that he or she has appeared on the top ten list.  The horse's numeric position on any previous top ten list shall be irrelevant to the calculation except in the event of a tie.  If a tie should occur, then the horse which has the highest average of top ten placings shall be placed first.
